THE SPECIALITY
The Subject of Oral Medicine is a fascinating subset of dentistry and Medicine.
It deals with oral disease; those with entirely local origin as well as diseases
with deeper ramification. It has been said that the mouth is a mirror to the general
health. It covers a spectrum that includes Oral Leukoplakia, pemphigus, oral tuberculosis,
oral candidacies, oral cancer, Sjogren’s syndrome, Temporo-Mandibular joint disease
or facial neuralgias. It also forms an integral part of Pain clinics and headache
clinics. Thus apart from all aspects of dental diagnosis the subject interfaces
with Internal Medicine, Skin, Orthopedics, Neurology, and Otorhinolaryngology. It
is also the branch which formally associates itself with Hospital Dentistry; oral
and dental care of Hospitalized patients.
ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of oral Medicine and radiology of Subharti dental college is a pivotal
department as it combines the three pronged responsibility of managing the initial
diagnosis and treatment planning of all the new dental patients including their
dental radiographic needs but also is the centre for Specialized cases for all oral
Medicine Cases and Advanced Maxillofacial Imaging.
A post-graduate program has been started in this branch in May 2009.
In both the under-graduate as well as the post-graduate curriculum apart from the
usual didactic training a strong emphasis is placed on clinical training and clinical
tutorials.
Located in the ground and first floor to the right of the central lobby the department
sprawls over 6735.25 square feet , it has an undergraduate section,
Post-Graduate Section , Special clinic, Sterilization Area , PG seminar
room , Intra-oral radiography section, Extra-oral Radiographic section, OPG Section,
dark Room, and a radiographic reporting Room .
ORAL MEDICINE SECTION :
We see about 150 -200 newly registered patients per day with about 25-30 patients
referred to the Oral medicine clinic for detailed evaluation by the Oral physician.
We have a strong appointment based follow-up of our cases
All mucosal lesions are recorded appropriately using digital or conventional SLR
camera or intra-oral camera. This helps us to monitor objectively the progress of
a lesion or the results of treatment as well as it forms a teaching record
Lesions requiring biopsy are biopsied or referred to the Oral Surgery for the same
Referral to the Medical College is carried out to complete the diagnostic evaluation
for oral diseases with underlying systemic condition..
DENTAL AND MAXILLO-FACIAL RADIOLOGY SECTION:
The department possesses 4 intra-oral X-ray machines and 1 Extra-oral X-ray unit
and an automatic radiographic film processor. We perform and report about 100 intra-oral
and 15-20 extra-oral radiographs every day.
SPECIAL EQUIPMENTS IN THE DEPARTMENT
- A
TENS Kit to treat and design studies in the use of TENS in management of
oro-facial pain.
-
Sialography Kit-contrast imaging of salivary glands in indicated cases.
- Radiograph Duplicating Machine We have a duplicating machine of Dentsply to make
additional radiographic records for the teaching program without causing any additional
dose to the patient
-
Digital Intra-oral Radiographic Systems as well as
Digital OPG machine: Digital systems are slowly being given precedence
over conventional techniques world over. Digital OPG is of Vatech systems and the
digital software and sensor for intra-oral radiography is X ray Vision by Unicorn
- Computed tomography, Dentascan, MRI, USG Access and Facility: The sister
Medical College in the same campus has the above mentioned equipments to be used
by us with their help to obtain images in indicated cases. We have GE machines for
both spiral Computed tomography, as well as the 1.5 Tesla MRI in our associated
Medical College
The department of Oral Medicine and Radiology organized a symposium on “Dental management
of Patients with special needs” in conjunction with department of Pedodontics and
department of Oral Surgery in November 2009.
The Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology organized first ever Triple ‘O’ CDE
scientific programme on “Oro-Facial infections in collaboration with department
of Oral surgery & Oral Pathology in March 2010.
- Achievements
- Department HOD Dr. V. Sreenivasan, headed the scientific committee of the XXII National
IAOMR conference, held at New Delhi, December 2010.
- Department PG student Dr. Ankit Goel brought laurels to the institute by winning
1st prize at triple ‘O’ symposium held at Hyderabad on September 2009.
- Publications
The department faculty has published their scientific works in reputed National
and International Journals.

Pt. with TMJ disc disorders and normal subjects keeping MRI as reference- a comparative
study.
